Aberlour 12 years old, Double Cask
This distillery was first introduced to me by a co-worker who was particularly fond of one of their creations, the Aberlour A’bunadh, which is a small batch creation that includes bottle number, batch number and the cask strength since every batch is different.
This attention to detail intrigued me, hence I decided to try the fruits of their labor, starting with the least costly before I start to venture into the higher shelves.
This speysider starts off with a dried fruit, butter and charred oak aroma; the hints of butter was a surprise to me coming from a whisky, but a welcomed one. On the tongue, this drop is an extremely smooth player with a nice richness that encompasses the mouth, balanced with a tinge of bitterness. It’s buttery with hints of maple syrup, nutmeg, and some oak, then continues into the finish with a slight bitter undertone that reminds me of coffee and doesn’t last too long. There’s no smoke to be found in this one, so if you’re looking for a big peaty hit, this is not the drop you are looking for.
I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, it reminded me a bit of spicy rum-raisin cake, which is why this whisky is a great accompaniment to any after dinner sweets or it can stand alone as a digestif. It’s a very good dram for the price; can’t wait to try the other creations from this distillery.
